Abundant Life Race Charity assists
“MISSION OF HOPE”
Kampala, Uganda

In 2006 the Abundant Life Race Charity assisted in funding a mission trip to Watoto Child
Care Ministries in Kampala, Uganda for 21 members of the Church of Abundant Life in
Braintree MA.  The Church of Abundant Life in Braintree, MA planned and raised funds to
allow 21 members to visit Watoto for 14 days in July 2006.
CONSTRUCTION TEAM
The construction team from COAL included a varied group of individuals ranging in age
from 16 to 72.  Several professional carpenters, including Chris Amedee, a crewman for the
Abundant Life Race Charity, worked alongside teenagers, university administrators,
business owners, engineers and a retired grandmother to not only provide the funds needed
to purchase the material for the class rooms but also to work at making the bricks out of
the red clay soil of Uganda.

Greg has had the privilege to speak with different members of the team since the Mission
took place.  They have shared with him not only their experiences of Watoto but also how it
has changed their lives.  Some of their hopes and dreams of being on the mission field will
be assisted by Abundant Life Race Charity
Dr. Chris Mannasas with his team of six
medical professionals led classes for the
“house mothers” in first aid training and
administered medical treatment to the
children and adults of the Watoto
community.  They worked alongside the
Watoto medical team and brought over 50
medical kits which were distributed to the
community. They were also able to bring a
portable echocardiogram machine to perform
echocardiograms on many children and adults
in Watoto
The group headed up by Rev. Ron Ray, Pastor of Church of Abundant Life, went with two
purposes.  The first purpose was a “Medical Team” headed up by Dr. Chris Mannasas, a
family physician practicing at Boston University Medical Center and a member of Church
of Abundant Life.  The second purpose was a “Construction Team” which would build two
school rooms for the children of Watoto.

ABOUT UGANDA:
Uganda has endured brutal dictators, civil war and the deadly AIDS epidemic.  AIDS has
left an estimated 2 million children in Uganda orphaned, 880,000 of them as a result of
AIDS alone.  The country is still suffering from a past of corruption brutality and
oppression.  The economy is improving, but still struggling.  Social services are scarce,
water and sanitation systems are unavailable to most, and poverty and disease are
prevalent.  Every day scores of children are orphaned and abandoned in the streets.  The
government, as well as private baby homes and adoption centers, are not equipped to
provide care for them.  Watoto was born out of this need.  It is addressing this crisis and
is providing hope for the nation.

WATOTO CHILD CARE MINISTRIES:

Watoto Child Care Ministries was founded in 1992 with the mission of raising Ugandan
leaders by focusing on the essential needs of parentless children by providing physical,
educational, emotional and spiritual needs.  Watoto takes in orphaned children between
the ages of 2 and 12 and places them in families providing food, shelter, education, health
care, and family values.  Watoto not only takes care of the immediate problem of
providing food, shelter, education, health care and family values but their mission also
includes training the children academically and spiritually so that they will enter society
equipped with necessary life skills and moral values.  This will enable future generations
to make a significant and lasting impact on the future of Uganda.

Watoto operates 3 children’s villages and cares for over 1500 children.  The villages
include over 130 individual homes, each accommodating 8 children and a house mother.
A complete school system for the Watoto children as well as for the surrounding
community, a medical clinic, a church/community center, an agricultural project providing
food, a clean water source and electrical power is provided by Watoto.  The result is a self-
sustaining village that serves the children while providing employment for women and
teachers, and steady jobs for laborers.

The homes provided by Watoto accommodate eight children and a house mother.  They
consist of three bedrooms a kitchen, living area and bathroom.  Each house also has
running water and electricity – an uncommon amenity in Uganda.  They are constructed
of brick and steel on a concrete slab have windows with shutters, porches, flowerbeds and
clothes lines.  Each house is furnished with bunk beds for the kids, living and dining room
furniture, and most of all, an abundance of love.
