| In 2006 the Abundant Life Race Charity assisted Gia Routhier with the “God’s Precious Sparrows and Bottles for India” Ministry. Gia’s passion for people has taken her everywhere from the Boston Common working with the homeless to India, home of God’s Precious Sparrows. When a missionary from India spoke at Church of Abundant Life, Gia was moved by the love she felt for these little children. She prayed about what she could do to help these orphans at Faith Christian Church in Chennai, India. These children of Chennai, South India are homeless and living on the streets. They know no life but this life of poverty, of begging in the streets, of being thrown away, of being unloved and unwanted. They are surrounded by drugs, alcohol, prostitution and disease. Many of these babies live on the open ground, some making small tents close to the River Coomvan. This river filled with rubbish and sewerage is a breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes. Some of the children live directly on the streets with nothing but a piece of sidewalk to call their home. These childrens are poor, orphaned or just plain “throw aways!” Gia began by saving cans and bottles and then asking the congregation to bring their cans and bottles in. A can of soda with a redemption fee of one solitary nickel might not sound like much for most of us living here in the United States...but many cans bring in many nickels... which turn to dollars... which can turn to hundreds of dollars. Gia didn’t stop there. Her prayers for these children turned to finding families in the church who would “unofficially” adopt these children. One by one she began with close friends in the church and as Faith Christian Church would send Gia photos of these children, she would in turn, begin to circulate their photos to others in the church. The adoptee families would then not only write to their adoptive children but send gifts, clothing and toys. Gia’s plea for these children was simple. “Will you help me...It’s easy, here’s how” -Begin by praying for your Sparrow every day, watch the Lord transform their lives through you -Each month send your Sparrow a care package* and fill it as the Lord leads you Her suggestions for the packages are: -clothing, pajamas, shoes, sandals, socks and underwear (hand me downs in good condition) -Toothbrush, tooth paste, soap, shampoo, hair bows -School supplies, stickers, coloring books, bible story books -Toys, stuffed animals, dolls, puppets, balls, frisbees -Candy (The love it!) -Pictures of you and your family -Birthday cards -Money ($5 - 10 goes a long way) -Save your spare change, it adds up! Gia’s love, passion and heart for these children was matched by the love these children had for Gia. The Abundant Life Race Charity assisted Gia so that she could make the trip to India to visit and meet her beloved children at the orphange in Chennai, India. It is so amazing to see God use one woman with one soda can to make a difference in so many lives.
